When School Feels Too Hard: Finding Another Way

Support for School Refusal and School Can’t

At Think Bright Education, our experienced and qualified Australian teachers, mentors and counsellors support children and young people who may be experiencing school refusal, school can’t or anxiety about school.

Many young people feel overwhelmed by the demands of the classroom, and parents can often feel unsure about what to do next.

When we introduce ourselves to young people, we explain that we are a trusted adult and mentor. We are not their parent, and we are not their classroom teacher. We sit somewhere in between, offering guidance, encouragement and support in a way that feels safe and approachable.

Many young people experiencing school refusal are neurodivergent or may be struggling with confidence, emotional regulation or feeling behind in their learning. Others may be navigating challenges at home or feeling overwhelmed by the expectations of school. Over time, these pressures can build and school attendance can begin to feel impossible.

Our work focuses on building trust and rapport with young people and gently uncovering the barriers that make school feel so difficult. The goal is not to replace school long term, but to provide flexible, short term support during a challenging transition period. This gives parents breathing space and allows young people to reconnect with learning and confidence without pressure.

Sessions look very different from a traditional classroom. They are interactive, creative and tailored to each young person. We may establish weekly routines, explore interests, build emotional regulation strategies or engage in light physical activity to support wellbeing.

One of the most powerful tools we use is student led Passion Projects. Whether it is developing a small business idea, creating a website, exploring a hobby or diving deeply into a topic they love, these projects help young people rediscover motivation, ownership and purpose in their learning.

Our role is to walk alongside young people as a mentor, helping them rebuild confidence and a sense of capability. Parents remain in control of decisions about schooling, while we provide supportive guidance during a time that can feel overwhelming.Through connection, mentoring and interest based learning, Think Bright Education offers a bridge of support when school feels impossible and families are searching for a way forward.

Testimonials

Think Bright Education

"Our son, had been refusing school and eventually stopped going completely for a whole term. This was very hard to say the least. Just keeping him occupied during the days was very stressful. However, Cristina joined our “team” with immediate effect.

She brought a vibrancy to his days. A focus which he didn’t have despite our best efforts. Cristina’s gently approach allowed our son to start exercising his mind again. She was able to beautifully direct him towards areas of interest to him and to build on his strengths which no doubt built his capacity and in turn awoke his desire to be back in a classroom setting.

Her very personalised approach meant our son felt very seen and heard and they would have wonderful banter and laughs and this just continued to feed his recovery so to speak.

We were really taken by the amount of approaches Cristina came up with, the flexibility of these approaches too if they were not quite getting anywhere and the ease of learning through a screen. She very quickly built a strong rapport even though she was a thousand miles away. Quite extraordinary.

Our son is now attending school again, however we still check-in with Cristina and organised sessions as we see the benefits of this very special on-going connection."
